How to check if your content duplicated

Popular tools for checking duplicated content

To determine if content is copied, there are a few tools which are often used.

Here are the main ones: Copyscape, Siteliner, Plagspotter, Grammarly Online Plagiarism Checker, Prepostseo, and Smallseotools.

Each has its own pros and cons. For instance, Copyscape has a free version, but limited features,

whereas Grammarly checks against ProQuest databases, but is pricey for the premium version.

PlagTracker is simple to use, but is not suitable for academic purposes.

Smallseotools provides a comprehensive check, but has limited features in the free version.

Scribbr, in partnership with Turnitin, is comprehensive and detailed, but is expensive. Finally, Plagiarism Detector has a rewrite tool, but its quality is questionable.

Recommend: Microsoft's word built in feature

Microsoft offers a convenient and easy-to-use similarity checker feature to help you create original work and cite the work of others in your Word documents. This tool will show how much original content is in your document and make it simpler to include citations when necessary. You are able to focus on your writing more since the technical aspects of citations are taken care of. Your readers can distinguish what material is yours and those you cite will receive the credit that they deserve. Note: This feature was announced in March 2020 and is still being rolled out across Microsoft 365 subscriptions. It can take a few weeks to reach your account. This tool is only available for English language text.

To use the similarity checker:

1. Go to the Home tab, choose Editor.

2. In the Editor pane, locate Similarity and press Check for similarity to online sources. Once the check is finished, the Editor will display the percentage of your document that matches material found online and the number of passages that need to be reviewed.

3. To examine the passages, click Similarities reviewed. The Editor will take you to the initial passage and give you the option to add a citation. The link to the online content will enable you to decide if attribution is needed. If you do not wish to add a citation, select Ignore. The passage will be underlined in green after it has been reviewed. Clicking on it will open the citation suggestion once again.
